Creating crochet and needlecraft memories
My passions are sewing and crocheting. But where did that come from?
It started with a doll.
I guess you could have called it a 1960’s version of “Project Runway”.
The “contestants”: Girl Scouts ages 10 to 16
The “models”: discarded, unloved dolls
The Challenge: Create an outfit that would transform this castoff, unappreciated doll into the object of a little girl’s desire.
After judging, the dolls were to be sold, with all profits going to charity. Unsold dolls were donated to underprivileged children during a holiday toy drive.
I embraced the challenge with a fervor I had never known before. In my quest, I acquired an encyclopedia of needlework at a rummage sale.
I savored every chapter, each page unveiling a new creative whimsy. It catapulted me into a lifetime of creative pursuits. I learned to sew, crochet, knit and embroider. I have dabbled in needlepoint, candle wicking, crewel embroidery, counted cross stitch, appliqué and even making latch hook rugs.
I didn’t win the competition. Not even an “honorable mention”. But that did not put a damper on my creative spirit.
Today, I predominately sew, crochet, and scrapbook, but still can’t resist trying my hand at new crafty pastimes. So peruse my Whimsical Studio. You never know what you might find!
